Ultra-ultra-ultra rare.
Received not only a Coty award but the Golden Sound distinction for 1993 ! Quite a few other awards, too, but as for many other superlative Sony units, nobody knows about it.

The drive took on a very old idea: the Fixed Pickup Mechanism - introduced by Sony in... 1982 in the first commercially available CD player (CDP-5000), reintroduced here and later in 1994 with the CDP-XA7ES and CDP-X5000 and later again in the SCD-1 and SCD-777ES. Sony's original Twin Link System was retained, albeit in an "S" version I know nothing about. The D/A unit uses the little aluminium modules that would be part of the "1" series in 1999 (TA-E1, TA-N1 etc) and Sony's own D/A chips.

Production run is anybody's guess - probably no more than 100 of each? At 2,000,000 for the combo, Sony made these as showpieces for CD's 10th anniversary, available on order only. The CDP and DAS-R10 thus did not put to oblivion the previous CDP-R1a and DAS-R1a and both combos remained available together for a couple of years.

The not-yet-named-as-such Fixed Pickup Mechanism, where the whole motor and tray move under the fixed pickup. You'll see here that, unlike the later (smaller) FPMs, there is a platter on which the CD resides but, seemingly, no clamp... I don't know what material this platter is made of but, given Sony's long history into composites, it is likely to be made with at least some ceramic powder. The fact that there's a platter turns this unit into something like a Pioneer "Stable Platter" system - but let's not forget Sony first pioneered this trick in 1982 (more on this later).
The back holds the following outputs:
1x BNC for DAS-R10 sync,
1x BNC,
1x RCA,
1x AES,
1x optical (TOS),
1x optical (ST),
and the Twin Link.

The five switches to the right are simple on/offs for each digital output (like on the later CDP-X5000) with only the Twin Link and sync-BNC that cannot be switched off.
T he two left switches are for the Twin Link: on/off and sync with the DAS-R10 through the BNC, AES output or no sync at all.
The front display surprisingly uses an LCD screen instead of an FL or DotMatrix - LCD displays are supposed to not radiate bad waves onto the surrounding electronics...

Unfortunately, the lit' I have isn't very rich about what's inside the DAS-R10... All-Sony chips (unlike the previous DAS-R1 and R1a) and there seems to be some DSP functions but the details remain unknown so far.
There's a "filter" button on the front which probably was foreshadowing the equivalent function on Sony's later players which would allow the user to choose between several frequency response curves and bandwidths to fit his/her mood/rooms/favorite flavor etc

But one can clearly see the aluminium modules that would be the center of the later TA-E1, TA-N1 or SCD-1.
The back holds:
1x BNC (for CDP-R10 sync),
1x BNC,
1x AES,
1x RCA digital inputs,
3x optical (TOS),
1x optical (ST),
and the Twin Link.

Analog outputs are either balanced or unbalanced ; a "phase/invert" switch is also present on the front.
