映像1:580与931不成其为对手(不用功放);
映像2:931不用功放问题似乎不大,580就不得而知了;
yxiao 2001-3-21 01:14

Topic: Comparison of DT990, DT831, DT931, HD600
Two days ago I got my first delivery from Beyerdynamic and thought this to be a good occasion to test and compare the various headphones at my disposal.
The candidates:
Beyerdynamic DT990: My 12-year old classic. Still in good shape and recently refurbished by giving them new ear-pads.
Beyerdynamic DT831: By many considered one of the best closed headphone systems.
Beyerdynamic DT931: Beyerdynamic's top-of-the-line open headphone.
Sennheiser HD600: No introduction needed.
Sennheiser HD600 modified: I added a RC-network to dampen high frequency noise and changed the cable by another one, home-made from an Alcatel double shielded coaxial audio-cable.
Equipment:
CD-Player: A heavily modified Marantz CD72-MkII SE
Filter: CORDA ANALOGUER-1
Headamp: CORDA HEADAMP-1
Interlinks: home-made from Belden cable
CONSTRUCTION QUALITY AND TOUCH:
DT990: These headphones still feel remarkably well for their age. They provide good confidence in the durability of the Beyerdynamic devices. Note: this is the old version with plastic headband and a size-adjustment mechanism similar to that of the DT831/931. More recent versions of the DT990 have a metal band with a different mechanism.
DT831: Ai, these come in a rather flimsy and cheap box. Not a very good first impression. However, the headphones feel good and sturdy, a little bit too much plastic feeling maybe. They look cool; black head band, gray-bluish earcups and silver-gray paddings give them slightly agressive appearance. Clear color markings for left/right and a nice, relatively thick coiled cord. Very good finishing.
DT931: The same flimsy box. They look and feel very similar to the 831. The earcups are a little bit darker and the lookings are a little bit less agressive. Some might even find them a little bit boring.
HD600: A very noble box, made from high quality cardboard and with a shaped foam inside makes a splendid first impression. The headphones look distinguished too and show a noble kind of elegance. Superior finishing but the cord feels flimsy. I know that it won't break (it has a kevlar reinforcement inside) but this cord clearly has been optimized for comfort and flexibility. It makes you feel sceptic about sound quality.
HD600 modified: Same as the HD600 but the Alcatel cable is relatively thick and stiff.
COMFORT:
DT990: Light weight, low mechanical pressure and large O-shaped paddings make them extremely comfortable to wear. Like all Beyerdynamic models the coiled cord prevents cable-salat but if you need a longer cable length it exerts a light tension.
DT831/DT931: These headphones are a little bit more heavy and clumsy then the other models but thanks to the large paddings still very comfortable to wear. As mentioned before the coiled cord exerts some tension if stretched.
HD600: Although it doesn't look so, this headphone is a real light-weight. However, the relatively small oval-shaped paddings do touch my earcups and the pressure exerted by the headphones is a little bit high, resulting in a tight fit. Comfortable, but I personally prefer the DT831/DT931. People with smaller heads/ears, however, might prefer the Sennheiser.
SOUNDQUALITY
Before testing all new headphones were "treated" for 12 hours with a special burn-in CD-track.
I used different CD's, each to check specific aspects of sound-reproduction.
The first track used was by Christy Barton singing her version of "I ain't no sunshine in my life". A wonderfull Chesky recording on which she is accompanied by acoustic bass only. Both musicians shape and color every note with very fine nuances that are very difficult to reproduce:
The DT990 clearly has its difficulties to reproduce these nuances. The acoustic bass sounds flat and dull. The smokey voice of Barton has a veile and the soundstage is very distant. It's a warm but somehow muddy sound. Not very detailed but comfortable to listen to.
The DT831/DT931 both sound surprizingly similar. Basses do not go very deep but are very tight with a clear stop-and-go. Every nuance of the acoustic bass can be followed with ease. The voice of the singerin sounds a little bit bright though. Not irritating but it's just a little bit too much.
The HD600 sounds very comfortable. Deep basses and a slightly retained treble result in a warm sound. However, basses are not very tight. There is no clear stop-and-go when the bassist strikes his strings and color-shading of the low tones is not very distinct. The mid-range is beautifull though; relaxed and silky.
The modified version of the HD600 sounds better. Basses are better articulated and the treble is a little bit more clean. The overall character of the headphones does not change much, though.
The second track was the third movement of the ninth symphony of Dvorak, played by the Vienna Philharmonic under Kondrashin. This is a warm and glorious recording with a complex soundstage.
With orchestral music the DT990 sounded distant. Single instruments were not well seperated and dynamicity was missing.
The other Beyerdynamic models did a much better job. Both the DT831 and the DT931 produced a bright dynamic sound with the DT931 having a slightly better soundstage and basses. Both headphones sound very similar and I wonder whether they have the same drivers.
Again, the HD600 produced a comfortable sound. Warm but with good detail. Soundstage appears a little bit flat and distant compared to the DT831/DT931. The Beyers are also a tad more dynamic.
Nearly every Pop-fan will have a copy of "Brothers in Arms". This recording of the Dire Straits is a modern classic with a very clean sound. "Ride across the river" is a very good track to test transient responses. Those guitar-strokes are not very easy to be reproduced properly.
By this time I decided to drop the DT990. I don't know how modern versions of this classic headphone sound, but my old copy simply runs too far behind his modern rivals to be competitive.
Both the DT831 and the DT931 showed a very fast attack. Guitar strokes came sharp and well defined. The sound was a little too bright for my tast but dynamicity was very good. The DT831 sounded slightly colored and soundstage was also a little bit less open than that of the DT931.
In comparison the attacks on the HD600 are much slower. Sound is more relaxed and the bass digs deeper but in the whole some drive was missing.
The last test was the beautifull voice of Cecilia Bartoli. The "Live in Italy" recording of this soprano, accompanied by baroque orchestra puts high demands on the upper regions.
The DT831 and DT931 now showed their limitations. Both headcans are simply too bright to reproduce this music in a comfortable way. The HD600 simply sounded beautifull, giving every nuance with an unmatched eloquence.
So what are the results:
The DT990 does not betray its age. It is not a bad headphone but compared to the other systems it is a muddy and veiled
Both the DT831 and DT931 reproduce rather similar. The DT931 is a tad less colored and provides a more expansive soundstage. Both headphones are bright which can be nerving with some kinds of music. Bass doesn't dig very deep but it is very well defined and very tight.
The HD600 has a noble sound. A little bit laid back. Beautifull mids but the bass, although going very deep, is a little bit muddy.
Is this the end of the story?
No, it isn't!
My CORDA Headphone amplifier has two headphone jackets. One with a low output impedance and one with an 120 Ohm impedance. For the review I used the low impedance jacket since I knew by experience that this one produced the best results with the DT990 and the HD600. A low output impedance results in a higher damping factor and thereby in a better control of the amplifier over the headphone action.
However, in accordance with international audio-norms, many headphones are sonically designed to work at a jacket with a 120 Ohm impedance. An increased output impedance generally increases the bass response but also makes them more muddy.
In order to be fair, I decided also to listen to the DT931 through the 120 Ohm jacket. I put in the Christy Barton CD again and guess what happens. Suddenly my feet started to move just by themselves!!
Gone was that brightness that nerved me. The bass went much deeper (although not as deep as that of the HD600) but without becoming loose. Dynamicity? Well, simply a class better than the Sennheiser. Despite several previous hours of intense listening I felt an immediate urge to start dancing.
I run through all the aforementioned CD's again. Dvorak sounded spacious and glowing. The guitars of the Dire Straits sounded sharp as a razor's edge without nerving. Cecilia's voice simply was heavenly. I spend another half of hour just listening to this single headphone. Half an hour of pure joy :-)
To me it appears that, in contrast to many other headphones, the DT931 really was designed to work at an 120 Ohm output impedance. The increased impedance value makes them sound much better and, believe it or not, to my ears they now simply outclass the HD600.
One should expect the DT831 to show some similar effects. This is true but to a much lower degree. They still kept some of their brightness and the bass did not extend as far as that of the DT931.
Still, these headphones are very agreeable, especially if you do not want to disturb your roommates or don't want to be disturbed by a noisy environment noise. They do not completely block outside noise, but they allow you to listen at a much more acceptable level, thus reducing the risk of long-term ear damage.
My conclusions:
The DT990 is a classic design that can not keep up with modern standards.
The HD600 is a noble looking and sounding headphone for people that prefer a more distant and laid-back presentation. Improvement in sound can be obtained by using a better cable and RC-termination.
The DT831 is the optimal solution for family-fathers (and mothers of course :-)
The DT931 is my favourite, especially when driven by a jacket with an increased output impedance. I only ordered one specimen but I have to get some others, since this one will not leave my house. I'm now bothered by the question how to open these cans. Simply want to know what an audiophile cable and RC-termination will do. But that's another story.
Happy listenings,
Jan

I own a DT990 for over 10 ten years now, and always have been very pleased by it. Nice, warm sound and extremely comfortable. A few months ago I bought myself a HD600 by mailorder. When I tried it at first I was rather disappointed. Compared to the DT990 it sounded a little bit shallow and lacked bass. However, I put the Beyerdynamic aside and only used the Sennheiser for two months.
It just happened that I compared the two systems again last week. The Sennheiser showed to have improven considerably and now surpasses the Beyerdynamic in every discipline. More balanced sound, tighter bass. Simply superb.
The DT990 is very good but, after a break-in, the Sennheiser sets the standard. They are, however, a little less comfortable.

hotpoint 2001-3-21 04:48
hermit@gz.gd.cn 2001-3-21 09:38
yxiao 2001-3-22 01:53
yxiao 2001-3-22 02:27
hermit@gz.gd.cn 2001-3-22 10:27

guorong 2001-3-23 07:37
yxiao 2001-3-31 12:14
