It would not be an exaggeration to say that virtually everyone who has listened to recorded music has heard Sax’s work; the list of albums he’s mastered is staggering. For the past five decades Sax’s The Mastering Lab has been the first choice of everyone from chart-topping pop stars to audiophile-reissue labels. Consider that he mastered The Doors' first album in 1967 and Bob Dylan's 2015 releaseShadows in the Night.But Doug Sax was much more than the world’s greatest mastering engineer; he is also the father of the modern direct-to-disc recording, and also of stereo direct-to-disc recording. Before the advent of magnetic tape, all recording was direct to disc (and mono). But two decades after the widespread adoption of tape in the late 1940s, Sax resurrected this lost art and built a record label, Sheffield Lab, around the technique. He recruited his high-school friend, Lincoln Mayorga, to be the musical half of Sheffield Lab. By bypassing tape, and recording a musical performance directly into the master lacquer in real-time, Sax thought he could make better-sounding records. Those Sheffield direct-to-disc LPs are now legendary for their sound quality. How many audio systems were sold during the 1970s and 1980s through a demonstration of Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker? Or Harry James’ King James Version? Those records, and others in the Sheffield catalog, still stand today as stunning reminders of how great direct-to-disc can sound.Doug Sax inadvertently played a pivotal role in my career. I was a recording engineering student in 1981 when I came across an article in Recording Engineer/Producer magazine detailing the creation of Sheffield Lab 17, Tower of Power Direct. I came from the professional audio world whose values are often not aligned with those of audiophiles. I read in amazement about the hand-made tube microphones with integral preamps that put out line level signals. About how all connectors in the signal path were removed and hardwired in place with silver solder. About how the entire recording/mastering chain was pure tube (including the amplifiers that drove the cutting heads), and how the engineer mixed the band on the fly while the cutting engineer captured that signal in the master lacquer as the band performed the entire LP side without interruption. For me, discovering these extraordinary recording techniques that were never taught in a college program fundamentally changed the way I viewed recording and reproducing music. It was like discovering a whole new world. As I learned more about Sheffield's techniques, and listened to the records, Doug Sax became my hero. He embodied an ethos in which no measures were deemed too extreme in the pursuit of musical realism.

母盘后期制作(Mastering)三大师    我最近整理了一下收藏的CD唱片,惊奇发现我的收藏中有相当的数量的CD的母盘后期制作出自以下三位大师之手:Doug Sax、Bob Ludwig、Bernie Grundman(排名不分先后)。这三位是唱片界如雷贯耳的大人物,但受关注较少。往往CD唱片内封的最后才会出现: Mastering by …at … Studio,这条信息可能很少有人留意。然而,对于唱片发烧友而言,这条信息是Hi-Fi品质的保证。在这篇小文中,笔者简要介绍三位大师的情况、重要作品、Mastering的中文唱片。部分资料源自网上英文网页,经过整理和翻译,因此难免有缺失和错误翻译,请大家批评指正。一、    Doug Sax1、基本情况Doug Sax是著名的Mastering Lab的老板,Mastering Lab由Doug Sax在1967年在好莱坞开办,是世界上第一家独立的母盘后期制作机构(即独立于唱片公司)。目前,Mastering Lab拥有好莱坞和加州Ojai两个工作室。 Doug Sax的弟弟Sherwood Sax在电子设备和信号传输方面善制独门绝器,为Doug Sax在mastering领域始终保持与时俱进的艺术性(revolutionary state of the art)提供技术保障。(感兴趣的朋友可以浏览Mastering Lab的网址:http://www.themasteringlab.com)另外,Doug Sax可能是与Hi-Fi联系最紧密的一位mastering大师了,他还与别人合伙办了一家专门炮制发烧唱片的“喇叭花”(Sheffield Lab)。相信不少发烧友都拥有“喇叭花”的唱片。2、Doug Sax操刀的mastering几张著名唱片(排名不分先后)(1)Pink Floyd-Dark Side of The Moon这张唱片就不用我多介绍了吧。我收藏了这张唱片的普通版CD、20周年纪念版CD和多声道的SACD。其中,20周年纪念版CD和多声道的SACD由Doug Sax操刀mastering。从Pink Floyd的The Wall 专辑开始,Doug Sax接手了mastering的工作,The Wall 专辑和之后的专辑都是Doug Sax出品。对于The wall 之前的专辑,唱片公司做Re-master版本或纪念版时,也均是Doug Sax操刀Re-mastering,上面的Dark Side of The Moon便是一例。因此,说Doug Sax是Pink Floyd的御用mastering engineer名符其实。Pink Floyd的唱片可以每张都收藏,如果非要优中选优,笔者推荐Dark Side of The Moon的SACD版和The Wall两张。(2)Sheffield Lab Drum and Track Disc(XRCD)严格意义上说,这张XRCD已经属于日本JVC的mastering engineer的Remastering作品。原版Drum Record & Track Record在黑胶LP年代可以说是当年发烧友最渴望拥有的两张LP,是由Doug Sax担纲制作人兼mastering engineer,“喇叭花”出品。Lim公司将这张两张“经典极品”LP的母带拿去JVC那里做XRCD2制版,2合1推出这张Sheffield Lab Drum and Track Disc。笔者没有原版LP,但是收藏了这张XRCD。虽然XRCD是出奇的贵,但是对于想了解Drum & Track Disc风光史的发烧友来说,又岂能错过。(3)Aaron Neville-Warm you heart这是被誉为男声最好的唱片,发烧友几乎人手一张, Doug Sax操刀Mastering的经典之作。补充一点,最近在唱片店看到有JVC Remastering 的XRCD出售,价格还是出奇的贵。笔者收藏了普通版的CD,觉得已经足够Hi-Fi,便没有被唱片店赚去额外的银子。(4)Bill Evans-Waltz for Debby这是一张经典的爵士唱片,被誉为Bill Evans最经典的作品,爵士乐迷人手一张。鉴于其出色的录音,我相信纯粹的发烧友大概也是人手一张。请记住,这张唱片还是由Doug Sax mastering。以上四张唱片分别属于摇滚、发烧试音、流行、爵士不同风格,Doug Sax都完成的游刃有余,显示了其作为mastering大师的风范。在挑选唱片时,如果mastering engineer是Doug Sax,那么在录音效果方面便可以放心。喜欢的乐队/歌手 Doug Sax Mastering应该毫不犹豫的掏银子拿下。3、Doug Sax mastering的几张中文唱片(1)齐豫-藏爱的女人很多人知道这是齐豫的一张知名发烧天碟,如果知道这是Doug Sax的mastering 作品就会恍然大悟了。(2)陈绮贞-华丽的冒险陈绮贞是个“奇”女子,《华丽的冒险》这张唱片她找来两个顶级的mastering 大师制作了两个mastering版本。香港和台湾发行的是Doug Sax版本,而大陆发行的是Bernie Grundman版本(Bernie Grundman将在后文详细介绍)。据说,陈绮贞是向银行贷款,自己砸锅卖铁弄了这两个版本。大师的mastering费用可是不低啊!陈绮贞在BBS上写下了下面的文字,抄录以飨大家:“我想这大家不一定感兴趣,但是我还是稍微说明。在美国做母带的时候,其实我们因为太好奇同一个母源,会有哪些不一样的差别。说穿了是想狠狠地上一堂音乐课,得以知道这并不是一件昂贵的国王的新衣,穿在那些没有自信的唱片身上。所以,有了两个全然不同的版本,来为我曾经亲身经历他们巧妙地带着音乐走进不同风景的过程,留下一点也能让别人参与的什么。之所以想告诉大家,那并不是唱片公司的噱头,而是我的主意。本来我甚至有点后悔专辑中《旅行的意义》和《腐朽》的歌序应该要对调,而陷入要不要重新生产母带的疯狂想法。但毕竟这不是音乐本质上的事情,比起现在开始写下的音乐或文字似乎更重要。但是不同的mastering版本是已然存在的。如果同学们对不同音响质感能提供的想象也很有兴趣的话,不妨可以用不同的角度聆听。不那么在意科技的部分(虽然我就是在科技浪潮里试着传达我们的情感)的同学,也许可以选择不多花钱购买,歌曲和包装会完全一样(我得到的承诺是如此)。就算没有后面的这些音响包装过程,我对这些音乐的诚意仍然不变。会在这里尝试解释,是因为以往有太多的误会。也许都是来自于自己羞于为自己的决定多说什么决定的。所以为了有可能发行的另一个mastering版本在这里向大家报告。”从上面的文字可以看出陈绮贞骨子里的Hi-Fi情结,什么也多说了,赶快到唱片店将两个版本的《华丽的冒险》都买下来。笔者认为,中文流行唱片出现两位顶级mastering大师参与的机会可遇不可求,不敢说绝后,至少是空前的。(3)梁静茹-亲亲这是梁静茹2006年发行的唱片,里面有《暖暖》、《大手拉小手》等热门歌曲。没想到这唱片居然是由Doug Sax和Robert Hadley合作mastering(Robert Hadley也是大师级mastering engineer)。笔者在偶然的机会买入这张唱片,在唱片内封发现这个信息。不敢说这张唱片达到天碟标准,至少是一张制作相当优秀的唱片。(4)其它由Doug Sax mastering的中文唱片伍思凯:心动了 (点将唱片 1995年)张震岳:这个下午很无聊(滚石唱片1997年)笔者在网上查到的资料就是这些,可能有遗漏。台湾的一些流行歌手出于追求优秀的后期制作效果角度,纷纷将母带托付Doug Sax mastering。遗憾的是,笔者还没有发现国内的例子(不知道是否有遗漏?)。高昂的mastering费用可能是主要的原因。另一方面,台湾的音乐人与Doug Sax毕竟合作多次,建立了一定的合作关系。

科普一下,前期录音师和母带录音师还是有分别的。Doug Sax是母带录音师。前期录音师是在现场布置话筒、负责原始录音的那个。有时也叫Balance Engineer,因为他操控多个音轨的平衡。母带录音师做的是录音母带的加工和处理。

打个比方,前期录音师犹如拿着相机对模特儿按快门的那个摄影师,母带录音师则是做PS的那位。

白版说的正是,准确地说ps是mix和edit阶段,而母盘制版就是印前制版。Balance Engineer易求,mastering不好找啊。除了上述地三位外恐怕就只有Alan Yoshida,Cavin Gray,Ted Jeson厉害些了,对了还有Bruce leeck。。。

你把recording engenieer 和balance engenieer混淆了。
