If you saw my mini-review of the Shure vs prototype Westone 3 on 10//3/07 in the big Westone thread, then that comment would not be such a big surprise. These final production Westone 3 are every bit as good as I remember the Prototypes being. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/3314352-post1503.html
Around that same time I rated my Livewires customs as being slightly better than the Shure E500/SE530, but I didn't have them with me for the demo of the Westone 3 because they were being re-dipped to make the fit tighter. And I liked the Livewires better than my Triple.fi 10 Pro this January as well, and sold them within 2 weeks. With the Livewires there was a degree of transparency and realism that the Shure and Triple.fi did not offer, although the SE530 had a bigger soundstage than the Triple.fi and could come close to the head-stage of the Livewires.
After I converted my SE530 into customs and tuned for less bass and better treble, they came back sounding very similar to my Livewires. So I know the SE530's stock sound was simply how Shure decided to "tune" them. Until now, the only universal IEM to come close to my ideal has been the Klipsch Image X10 that I bought in July, which I sold less than 24 hours after hearing the final production Westone 3. After listening to the Westone 3 for an hour and then switching to the the Klipsch, I actually felt the Klipsch sounded thin and bodyless vs the Westone 3. Once my ears acclimated without the Westone 3 for 30 minutes, the Klipsch sounded good again, but switching from the Westone 3 to the Klipsch was simply striking after getting used to the Westone 3.
I am still evaluating the Westone 3 for my review, and have only tried two different pairs of universal tips that I previously had liked with the Shure SE530 - the Complys P-100 foam tips and some cut down triple flanges that I took off the smallest flange off the tip and shortened the stalk. I have also tried my Westone UM-56 custom fit tips. NOTE: I still have not tried ANY of the tips that came with the Westone!
At this point I have to say my favorite tip with the Westone 3 is my Westone UM-56 custom tips, followed by the Complys P-style foam tips (will try the T-series next). The modded bi-flange that I liked with the SE530 I don't like so much with the Westone 3 (so will also try the stock triple flange soon). I was having trouble inserting the UM-56 into my ears after all this time of not using them while waiting for Westone 3 to be released, until I looked at my Livewires realized that I was trying to insert the UM-56 tips upside-down and 180 degrees off. LOL.
With the UM56 the Westone 3 sit nice and flush in my ears, and they tuck-in 100% better than my SE530 did with the same tips. Within a week of owning the UM-56 last September I snapped the sound nozzle off one of my SE530 earpieces while sleeping with them in. There is NO way that can happen to the Westone 3 with the nice snug and flush fit I have - they tuck in as well as they do with any universal tip that is included. Mine fit flawlessly - not loose or too tight of a seal, and isolation is tremendous.
Now, for those eager for a "spoiler" to my review - I will say that at this point (with my Westone UM-56 custom tips) the Westone 3 are THE best universal IEM I have ever heard (I have not compared to any of my three pairs of customs yet as it takes time to do these reviews). The frequency balance with the UM-56 tips could not be better, and it is like they were make for each other (they were actually).
HOWEVER, the Westone 3 sound changes a lot with the different universal tips that I did try, and I find some small compromise in different areas with two different tips that I have tried so far. The P-series Complys that Dale at Westone donated to me on 10/3/07 are close in sound to the UM-56 custom tips but with less treble and more bass (but detail is still there). The Shure triple flanges cut short to a bi-flange with a shorter stalk have less bass and more treble than the UM-56, and in the process become less romantic or euphonic sounding. Up next I have to try all the stock tips that come with the Westone 3, including Complys T-series foam tips, single flange and the triple flange with the long stalks intact. |
