The TTVJ Millett 307A Headphone Amplifier is a remarkable single-ended vacuum tube headphone amplifier. It was designed and built for one purpose and one purpose only - to provide the best possible sound from headphones. Combining the best of classic design and modern components, it provides a listening experience unlike any other headphone amp available.
The 307A is a single-ended triode amplifier which employs transformer coupling, providing truly balanced inputs and outputs. The carefully designed single-ended circuitry uses only two triodes, which results in transparency and musicality that no other amplifier topology - tube or solid-state - can match.
This amplifier is not mass produced nor built by semi-skilled labor. It is hand crafted, one at a time, by its designer. All of the transformers are custom wound by hand in the USA by one of the finest audio transformer producers in the world, and were designed specifically for this amplifier. When it comes to sound quality, no expense is spared and no shortcuts taken. But you'll not find superfluous frills in the 307A either - no gold-plated chassis nor the latest audiophile fads. This is an amplifier like the old Western Electric would have built, using today's components.
The transformer-coupled output is capable of driving virtually any headphones, including notoriously hard-to-drive models like the AKG K1000 and low-impedance phones like Grados. A selector switch allows the user to select balanced or unbalanced outputs, and provides two impedance settings to optimize coupling from the output tube to the load. A special setting for high-sensitivity in-ear monitors (IEM's) is provided as well.
Though it can be driven by a preamp, for optimum sound quality the 307A provides three inputs (selectable by a front panel switch) and a precision stepped attenuator volume control, so it can be directly connected to a CD player, phono preamp, or other source.
Special attention was paid to make the 307A as quiet as is possible for a tube amplifier. The tube-rectified power supply uses a massive choke-input filter. And the directly-heated output tube's filaments are driven by a special DC constant-current regulator circuit. This, combined with transformer-coupled inputs that have extremely good common-mode rejection result in a very quiet amplifier.
Inside, the 307A is hand-wired using point-to-point wiring above a solid copper foil ground plane. Components are located as needed to provide the most direct signal path possible. This technique is expensive and labor intensive, but results in the highest fidelity and lowest noise possible.
The tubes used in the 307A are a bit unusual and probably won't be familiar to most audiophiles. Though they are uncommon, they are not rare, and old stock is readily available. After extensive experimentation they were selected because, quite simply, they are the best available for the job.
The input stage uses a 7N7 tube, which is a" loctal" variation of the familiar 6SN7 dual triode. The 7N7 is used because very high-quality, old-stock tubes are available that outperform any modern 6SN7 tubes. The output tube is a 307A directly-heated pentode, which when triode connected makes an outstandingly linear power amplifier. The 307A is a cousin of the famous 300B, but is better suited to the lower power required in a headphone amplifier. And the 5V4GB rectifier was selected for its slow warm-up time and high reliability.
But what does all this mean? The bottom line is how the 307A sounds. And it sounds wonderful.
