Gilmore Electrostatic Headphone Amp

Overview
The Gilmore Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier with Blue Hawaii Tube Output (KGBH) is the ultimate amplifier for electrostatic headphones. Inspired by Stax's rare $6,500 T2 amp, this design, also a solid state/valve hybrid, is based on Kevin Gilmore's solid state electrostatic amplifier and improves on it with a balanced tube output stage utilizing a matched quad of Valve Art EL34 tubes. A current-source comprised of fourteen state-of-the-art transistors per channel sets the bias power at 10 watts per EL34 tube resulting in a frequency response of -3dB @ 150Khz with a pair of Stax Omega II headphones. Like the solid state version, this amplifier by Kevin Gilmore drives all pro-bias Stax headphones as well as Sennheiser Orpheus phones with a special connector, available by request.
The amplifier is housed in a brushed aluminum enclosure, available in black or silver, measuring 16.5W x 16.0D x 3.5H inches. A balanced input and unbalanced input can be connected to the amplifier and selected by a switch. A pair of ladder-type stepped attenuator volume controls are standard in the KGBH as are the custom machined knobs. Quality components are used throughout the construction of this amplifier and a matched quad of Valve Art EL34 tubes are included. |
