Here is what I can say so far:
* Very neutral overall response, but perhaps just a tiny bit lush
* incredibly nuance and detail
* completely grainless
* an amazing transparency
* tremendous imaging and soundstaging
They are, undoubtedly, a phenomenal headphone, and an enormous step forward from the DT880 (or its siblings).
The are also a very significant cut above the HifiMan HE-5, in every respect.
I am hoping for a little more top-end extension and a little more very deep bass weight after break in - but if neither of those things happen, I would still be happy.
w/r/t the HD800, I don't have them anymore, and so I'm not sure my comparison would be valid. But from what I've heard over the last few hours, with no break-in, I think the two are in the same league, and there are subtle differences. From memory, the HD800 has the even more expansive soundstage, but the T1's have a presence to the mids that lends a sense of musical realism beyond what I ever felt from the HD800.
But let's see what the break-in does.
One good sign - I have been smiling a LOT while using them so far

And they do BOTH have great mids. Depending upon amp the HE-5 can be threadbare to glorious (amp dependent). The mids on the T1 are excellent..Piano... very nice! The blat of an Alto to Tenor from there to Baritone Sax....luscious! Vocals wonderful....but thats with my Ears, Gear and Music.
Just listened "Kansas City" soundtrack and the Trombone was heavy on the bone....tore a piece of flesh off with the incisive attack as it splat it's bleat! Tremendous soundtrack but the film was a smelly.....
The T1 is a low level phone without peer IMO....and the bottom is a phenom... Almost half way through the break-in and that break-in?...Really helping sort out my initial issues with the lack bottom control and low level micro details. The best quality...is the balance unto itself...all the Music is cut from the same cloth during playback and has a single voice...unique. Can't wait for my listen tomorrow night!!

So I'm on about 40 hours break in, and things are sounding pretty good. I agree completely with what Alan said above. I want to emphasize his point about BALANCE. This is a terrifically balanced headphone in terms of it's sonic presentation, and as a result, it sounds VERY natural, or, more accurately, music coming from it sounds very natural.
One thing which I think is a VERY good sign - different songs sound VERY different from each other - there is absolutely no homogenizing of the sound. So you have to listen to a bunch of songs you know REALLY well to get the right measure of the T1 - as one recording will often sound very different from the next, due to the recordings themselves. |
