Wadia have emailed me a press release dated 1/1/06 on their new 581 'Multi format audio player', which replaces their 861 line. There is also a 781 in the works which is supposed to replace the 861se, at a future date. The players contain a digital preamplifier which allow direct connection of the analogue outputs to a power amp, as do all previous Wadia players.
'Wadia 581 and 581i Disc Players feature multi-format stereo audio playback, new digital to analog technology and other sonic enhancements for CDs, SACDs and high rate sample sources.'
'The Wadia 581 is available now at a US retail price of $6950… The Wadia 581i [ has digital inputs and outputs] ia available now at a US retail price of $8450.'
The Press release is sparse. The new players use the Wadia finite impulse response filter, the Digimaster. ' New design features include a multi-format capable transport, an advanced proprietary software based DSD processing algorithm that generates bit corrected SACD playback.' The photo of the new player looks the same as the 861. 'Performance of this mechanism surpasses even the highly acclaimed 3.2 transport featured in previous players.' Reading between the lines, and extrapolating from the blurb on their new reference DAC 9, this is PCM converted DSD.
A Wadia rep who attended CES has e-mailed me regarding some questions I put to them. There has been some confusion in the Audio Asylum site re their new products.
1) The 581 stereo SACD player will be shipping in February 2006, contrary to the press release.
2) I asked what chips were used in the new players. "We use the best Burr-Brown chips available and are able to send them [ both the CD and SACD bitstream] to 768 kHz. We then use a series of the chips in parallel along with our patented DigiMaster upsampling software to produce a 1.4 MHz sample rate. Our digital inputs were only able to accept a sample rate of up to 24/96. We will be using the same Burr-Brown chips in our 581 and 781." This is the same approach used in previous Wadia products, with the exception of the 27 DAC, their top model until this year's series 9 DAC, which oversampled to 2.8 MHz. However, the Meitner DAC6e apparently processes the CD layer at no less than 5.64 MHz ie 128fs!
3) Transport? "We are not using the TEAC VRDS neo mechanism in our new multi-format products. We have chosen to move away from the TEAC mechanisms for these products and we are using a multi-format transport manufactured in Korea with optics manufactured in Japan. We are also making our own modifications to the mechanism as well as the servo board along with an additional board to help control the operational functions. Our newly developed transport will be incorporated into our entire line of multi-format products."
4) How do they implement the volume control for the DSD bitstream? "We use proprietary software to perform the DSD multibit conversions. We also have a proprietary digital volume control that provides a range of theoretically perfect volumes without losing bits of data."
581/781用的是韩国的光驱,确实有些垃圾,不过没有办法了,谁让TEAC不再提供VRDS给WADIA呢?
如果就是WADIA781和S7I选择,还是后者吧。
WADIA近来用都是Stream Unlimited的转盘,还是飞利浦一系的。

Stream Unlimited的转盘基于了Philips的经典型号,但在重点部位重新配置过,包括采用了无霍尔hall传感器无刷电机驱动控制,通过配置为力矩型控制,使响应速度快,控制精度高的优点。而且内部的读取系统是经过Stream Unlimited重新调校,Stream Unlimited是从Philips出来的工程师自创品牌,据说他家的读取系统做得比Philips还好。
WADIA20的托盘,还是塑料的,不够更厚实而已。虽然用的是VRDS的,但并非TEAC自家用的那种规格的VRDS,CD托盘部分采用了塑料而非铝合金。
Teac VRDS(无共振读取系统)
Teac VRDS(Vibration-FreeRigid Disc-Clamping System)意为无共振圆形压盘所构成的无共振读取系统。依照型号高低,VRDS可分成好几个等级。当中有“CMK3.2、CMK4”,其主要差别在于支架的强度及压片夹制造材料质量上。使用在顶级器材上的,多以铝铸框架构成,既重又稳,Wadia的高级CD唱盘或转盘就是使用“CMK3.2”结构;而将“ CMK3.2”的底盘、压盘以及压盘驱动电机固定架等改为塑料制品,便是中等级数的产品,如“CHK4”。VRDS是TEAC独立开发的读取结构,由于构造扎实,因此最早被Wadia看中用于制造高价转盘而闻名于Hi-End音响界。它也是目前欧美Hi-End音响商使用比较多的传动系统。VRDS系统是用一个与 CD唱片一样大的压盘夹子将CD紧紧夹住,让它不容易晃动,当CD唱片放人托片盘之后,托片盘抽屉收回机箱内,主底部轴承往上推,让CD唱片的背部贴着这块大圆形压盘,而VRDSS压盘由位于压盘上方的电机驱动、由于它不是自上而下压住CD,而是让CD靠上去紧紧内贴住它而随之旋转,所以增加了传动系统和 CD唱片之间的接触面积,使 CD唱片的转动更加稳定。VRDS转盘使用直线式读取机构,以伺服电机驱动,经过三层减速齿轮之后,通过螺旋状的金属棒带动激光头。整个激光读取头是架在两支抛光金属棒上的,上面涂满了润滑油,让激光头顺畅运行,代表作有TEACVRDS—10N、VRDS20N、VRDS- 25x,其它使用此系统之欧美音响厂商有:Hrell、Copland、EmsembleReSOlution Audio.
Teac给WADIA提供主要是VRDS MK3.2的那一种,这种系统外表看起来好像一架超小型精钢打造货柜吊车,其最厚处的铝材厚度达2公分,内中还有厚达0.5公分的工具碳钢。毫无疑问,这种包含CD镇的机械拾取系统是最高级的系统之一.但这个结构的CD片接触的转动承盘用的仍然为塑料。只有后到后期的WADIA 861SE这种高端货才在CD片接触的转动承盘改用铝与铜的合金制成,据说可更有效降低转动时所发出的轻微噪音。当然WADIA用的这个VRDS和TEAC的还是有不同,WADIA号称自己的工程师做了两百多项改进。所以,即使同为VRDS,但WADIA和TEAC的转盘会有差别。

对比看一下TEAC 自家的25X用的转盘看看有什么不同。
