A few months back the telephone rang at Pearl Audio Video.
John Loranger: “What do you want?”
“Hey John, it’s Alex Brinkman from Ayre. Is that how you answer the phone? ”
J: “Oh, uh..” “Hello, Pearl Audio Video, where something delicious is always cooking.”
A: “Huh?”
J: “Sorry, uh..” “Hello, Pearl Audio Video, where something good is always playing!”
A: “Better.”
J: “What do you want?”
A: “This is double top secret. You keep quiet you to what I’m going tell you?
J: “I’m Mr. Phelps baby!”
A: “If I told you that we were going to come out with a box in the size of a QB-9 tha-”
J: “Wait! Wait! Let me finish your sentence, you’re coming out with a preamplifier that has a digital input! That’s awesome! I’m so happy! Good Job!”
A: “Uh, no, that’s nice but well, that’s not quite it.”
J: “Wait! I still know what it is! It’s a new dac with usb and other digital inputs! You’ve finally come to your senses! It’s called the QB-5! Right? Thank you Alex!”
A: “Well, um, noo.”
J: “But Alex, this is what we need! My customers, OUR customers have been bing bangin, hip hikin and hawin for these?”
J: silently clicking to web page of alternate high end electronics line
J: “Soooo….. what did you make?”
A: “Well, it’s not official, but what would you think about a 24/192 analog to digital converter in a QB-9 chassis?”
J: pause..
J: longer pause..
J: now emailing web page of alternate high end electronics line to dealer friend Tommy.”opinions?”
J: “What!? What do I want that for? THIS is what you guys have come up with! You produced THIS when I need the other two things? ”
A: “Wha..”
J: “Johnny not happy!”
A: “But..”
J: “Johnny no like!”
A: “Let me..”
J: (Rant-Lock key is on) ” What are you mmmm..marketing, uh guys, thinking? I mean, I need, like all this other stuff and you come up with this weird little science project! You come up with an A/D converter? What am I Guitar Center? You think I should put up some of those big PA speakers around the store with guys blaring unintelligible announcements, and, and and have a bunch of big mauve-yellow “Regularly $1479, now $889!” signs all over the place? And and, maybe I should just start selling those HOSA cables and a bunch of yellow vinyl CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS guitar straps and.. and..you guys are a bunch of …and… bush league..and…injudicious…..troglodytes… and ….”
A: “Hsshut! It’s not what you think. ”
J: (Rant Lock still on) ”What do you mean? It’s always what I think! I’m always right! I, I ”
J: pause
J: “You guys, uh, you guys haven’t, by chance, started making any other kinds of, uh, products have you?”
A: “Zshhht!”
A: pause
A: “It’s not for the home studio recording guy…. It’s for the vinyl guy.”
J: (Rant Lock off)
J: long pause
J: quiet ”Hhlmm.”
A:”It’s for that big rig record player guy. It’s for that guy who’s really into vinyl, and wants to have super high quality copies of his record collection on his hard drive.”
J: quieter ”Mhtzzhhtph”
A: Yeah, exactly. What do you think?
J: “Well… I’m not sure. Maybe. But will it be all that many people? Or, will it be a once every other year sale to some guy named Horst who drones on about his Reel to Reel tape deck from ’78 and how he bought his in ’79 even though the ’79 was already out, but he wanted the ’78, not to save money, but because it was the one with the knurled instead of the counter-knurled knob, or…
John continues rambling and droning on for several minutes, Alex, aka St. Alex, turns speakerphone down, and reads the paper. Waiting.
J: “You know. I’ve been thinking”
A: silence
J: “And all I can think about is that I’m not so sure if it will sell, but I want one. I want one for just the reason you said. I’ve got a huge vinyl collection, but I don’t always want to play a physical record, and very very importantly, I want to preserve the pristine sound of them. I have quite a few records that are truly remarkable that I play a little sparingly because of how rare and special they are. I mean I still listen to them, yes, but it’s not like I’ll throw on one of my $50 records while I’m working or puttering around. I only listen to those when I’m in special music mode. I also worry about things like my Mobile Fidelity Sinatra collection. It’s a whole 8″ thick Boxed Set of Frank at his best that is possibly irreplaceable. It’s perfect too. I’ve never made a mistake with any of them or scratched one, but part of that is that I play them sparingly and only on my super clean high end record player. Rare vinyl is beautiful and a treasure to me.”
J: “You guys are right!”
J: “It’s good!”
J: “It’s great!”
J: “You guys should definitely make it.”
A: “Thanks. Charlie Hansen came up with the idea and we thought that lot’s of people would be like you”.
J: “Jah. I can see quite a few people wanting these. It’s an eternal completion piece for your stereo. It’s literally an essential as we move into the age of vinyl and high resolution digital audio.
J: I like it!”
A: <back in Boulder> Hangs up phone and looks over at Charlie Hansen.“Crazy Boy’s in.”
….. Months Pass … Time Marches on …. Until Today!
Well (this is still JL), this last weekend Ayre brought a pre-production QA-9 to the 2011 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest(RMAF) and showed it off. For our upcoming show this Thursday Oct 20, Alex will bring by a few recordings made with the QA-9 for us to enjoy. |
