The Sennheiser stock cable uses inexpensive Kevlar reinforced oxygen-free copper with a rubber-based dielectric. Due to the lack of strain isolation and the wire contact with the rubber-based dielectric, distortion is introduced into the signal. It offers two-dimensional soundstaging along with very limited detail and low-frequency transmission.
The Clou Blue and Red Jaspis uses inexpensive silver-plated copper wire with a standard Teflon dielectric. The Red is double insulated. The Clou's silver-plated copper yields good detail but limited bass and soundstage. Also, the silver plated copper can sound a bit harsh with certain recordings.
× Comparative Performance Translation
The Sennheiser stock cable does not allow the user to hear the music (instruments and vocals) correctly – they are dull and do not maintain individuality. The music merges together with a sound presentation similar to a flat, straight line from ear to ear. Due to the Kevlar and the rubber-based dielectric, the high frequency suffers lost of detail. Due to the high gauge oxygen-free copper wire, soundstage, mid-range and low frequencies don't have the proper medium to translate accurately.
The Clou Blue and Red Jaspis both offer a step up from the stock cable. They both offer considerably more detail but it comes with a price. Often times the detail conveyed by the silver-plated copper takes over the entire presentation and the listener experiences "scratchy" segments of a recording. This can even go a step further with some recordings sounding a bit harsh. The Clou cables also compromises the HD 600 great ability to offers warmth with detail because the silver-plated copper is unable to address the mid-range properly. The Clou cables do offer better soundstaging and low-frequency translation than the stock cable, but the problem is the HD600 and 580's are capable of offering a fuller, richer balance.
× Construction
The Clou Blue and Red Jaspis are well constructed but we do not feel they were aesthetically designed to complement the Sennheiser headphones. The Clou incorporates an inexpensive ¼" termination (3.5-mm version not available). The Clou is also stiff and not very comfortable to use.
Ergonomic Considerations
The Clou Blue / Red
3-m Blue weight without 1/4" termination: 150 grams / 4.8 ounces.
3-m Red weight without 1/4" termination: >150 grams / 4.8 ounces.
Blue cable geometry: 6.5-cm round.
Red cable geometry: > 6.5-cm round. |
