I've only tried the Equinox so far and can only compare it to the stock HD650 cable. Frequency-wise:
1. Treble extension and decay is greater than stock, in that you can actually hear more treble material appear versus stock; however the treble is not any more forward or any "louder" than stock. It's also extremely smooth, so smooth as to make the stock cable sound slightly grainy in comparison.
2. Midrange is a little less thick than stock. What I find mezmorizing about the Equinox in this region is that it actually has better resolution and coherency than stock, yet simultaneously sounds clearer and cleaner.
3. The way the stock cable presents the treble/midrange together creates a warmer, heavier, more "romantic" atmosphere. The way the Equinox presents its treble/midrange together creates a lighter, more airy sound.
4. There's a huge difference in bass. The Equinox has a much tighter bass impact versus stock. Bass does not hit as hard and is not as powerful as stock. The Equinox has an almost airy, lightweight bass response as a result. Audibly, it doesn't sound as weighty as stock, which is one thing I tend to miss at times. The incredible bass foundation I heard with the stock cable was one of the things that drew me to the HD650s at first. The stock cable wasn't very good at producing really deep, lower bass IMO due to its upper bass being so forward and overwhelming subtle lower bass notes. The Equinox doesn't seem any better at deep bass extension or decay either, but for a different reason...its bass is just simply on the light side.
The real reason though to get an Equinox if you ask me is for its headstaging capabilities. It increases the size of the HD650's headstage tremendously compared to stock, both to the front and to the sides. Sounds seem to emanate a good inch to two inches in front of me on some recordings, and 3 inches away from my ears to the sides. The headstage is just so huge with the Equinox...can you say earspeakers? The Equinox also completely eliminates the "three blobs in the head" effect the stock cable has, creating a completely whole half circle playing stage that goes from one ear to in front of your nose to the other ear.
Overall the Equinox turns the HD650s into an incredibly mellow and relaxing headphone. I wish the bass were a little weightier (I'm betting that I could get this though by changing my interconnects to Cardas Golden References, something I'm debating doing; there's also an incoming Raptor...), but in all other aspects I honestly think the Equinox takes what's good about the HD650s and really makes it better without changing the HD650's signature characteristics. If you want to make the HD650s livelier or make its treble more forward or want more details and seperation or any of those other typical audiophile merits, it's better to look elsewhere. I don't think any of that stuff were strengths of the HD650s to begin with and just isn't what it's shooting for, and neither are they strengths of the Equinox. I really like the HD650 + Equinox combo alot myself because it just lets music flow so incredibly well. Just pure musical bliss. |
