JA found high distortion values at 50hz / -3dB, at the transformer output (XLR) in his Instrumental measurements and at the moment there is a considerable curiosity / expectations by Audio Enthusiasts.
But about the sound "nuances" due to the transformer output:

"XLR/RCA. Whilst the balanced outputs do go the extra distance on transformer windings to be more complex, in my setup I slightly preferred them even though our Esoteric C-03 preamp doesn't use a fully balanced i/o path (single-ended volume control). The transformers added a subtly oily or viscous tone texture which made the RCA feed a tad more dry or matte. ... Whilst preferences vary, the RCA and XLR outputs do not sound identical. Experimentation is recommended to see what you fancy more."

"Quite possibly. Personally and within the context of my system, I quite like the slightly smoother XLR sound. The Wilsons are plenty lively and articulate themselves and with its balanced outputs, the Formula xHD already sounds more articulate and dynamic than the M1. Ultimately, the beauty of this is that one can simply choose whichever solution sounds best."
In our opinion, the -3dB at 50Hz is correct as laboratory signal, but corresponds to an extremely high reproduction level of low frequencies, a condition very difficult to find in the normal musical content. Also, it is almost sure that at these levels the distortion produced by the woofer at 50hz will be much higher than the one due to the transformers of Formula.
Given that Formula xHD is a true modular DAC, we have in development a new revision of XLR board with a new output transformer: our goal will be to combine sound quality, "nuances" and instrumental measurements.
I contacted John Atkinson and he will make a new "follow up" review of the updated Formula with new transformers for XLR output.“
